Spectrum Super Stars October 2020

Congratulations to our October stars of the month, Lillie Grace, Casey Wilson and Caroline Cavallaro, who all volunteered Labor Day weekend at our Spectrum Family Camp this year.

Lillie Grace

Volunteering for Spectrum Family Camp was by far one of the best decisions I have ever made. I had the opportunity to love on, laugh with, and help out such wonderful people from a community I hold close to my heart. I witnessed families come in stressed from everyday life and leave recharged and closer to one another. I am thrilled to have been apart of the weekend, and hope to continue volunteering with Spectrum.

Spectrum Family camp was in incredible opportunity for me to connect with children of all ages and give back to families similar to mine. Growing up closely with my cousin who is on the Spectrum, I have always had a special place in my hard for kids that are. Being able to laugh with and give the children and their parents a weekend away of fun is an incredible feeing. This was my first time with camp Spectrum, but it will definitely will not be my last!

I volunteered for the first time at SPECTRUM’s Family Weekend at Camp Twin Lakes during the COVID summer of 2020. When I arrived at camp, I was immediately struck by how quickly I was transported back in time to memories of my childhood summer camps. Within 30 minutes of the kids, parents, friends and guardians arriving I had 20 new buddies. The first day felt as if everyone were friends – an annual summer camp family – returning to each other. By the time dinner was served the first night I felt as comfortable as if I’d been volunteering for SPECTRUM’s Family Weekend for the past 10 years! I met people from all over the world and all had different senses of humor, different favorite songs and different activities that they were eagerly anticipating doing. There was rock climbing that turned out to be a HUGE event – as each camper scaled the wall towards the bell with an encouraging and cheering crowd below that sounded like a Super Bowl touchdown! There was also boating, swimming, HORSEBACK RIDING!!, archery, crafts – all day, every day –  and that before we even got to dinner! After dinner we had scavenger hunts, made our own rockets (and launched them!), played games, made smores by the campfire (complete with guitar and song) and THEN before bed EVERY NIGHT we watched a full-length movie outside under the stars!  I initially decided to volunteer for SPECTRUM’s Family Weekend in the hopes of making a kid’s summer camp a bit more enjoyable.  I was not prepared for how enjoyable the campers made MY weekend. I arrived at camp feeling like the new kid and when I left, I felt as if I had become a member of the family and am already looking forward to next summer!
